Early this morning at 4:00 am one of our dogs thought it would be a good time to bark waking my wife and up from a nice sleep. So got up and check everything turns out the dogs thought it was a good time to play with each other and it was nothing.

But today I started thinking about the choices I had made for my house gun. Right now I have my EDC pistol (glock 17) and 12ga pump. The pistol goes with me and the shotgun stays with my wife. This setup works pretty good in our house.

I'm kicking it idea around I my head of changing the set up a little. Thinking I might adding a pump shotgun so we both have one. But on the other hand the Hi point 4595 looks very nice. But again just kicking idea around in my head right now.

So wondering what you guys are using?

We live in deep south Texas and illegals along with drug trafficing is all around us. We are on a rancho out of town and alot of illegals come through these areas. I had another run in with 3 guys a nonth or so back. The dogs could not get them to back down from the back door. SO I had to tell them to leave in Spanish and that I was calling the "Migra." The guys were not the average illegals. They were dressed in what looked like 'Nam era jungle camo pants and jackets, with combat boots. Thought I was in a Red Dawn situation. So, I had to reach in the pocket and "print" my LC9 for them. Then they decided that they really didn't want anything and left. At least an S.O. officer and a few reserves that I know personally came quickly and they contacted the "Migra." The illegals were from a bunch that "bailed out" a mile from here.

So, it happerns a few times a year. Ony a few have been aggresive. So, I usually have at least some kinda pocket gun on me cause I am not always near the big stuff. This time I was asleep in the living room when the dogs gave the "unknown person" bark.

Always have a long and short pump 12s with heavy buck on buttstock elastic holders. And an old 870 Wingmaster 12 with heavy birdshot for larger yard pests like javelina. The tuskers give the dogs hell sometimes and cut them up. So, it's easier to hit them running with a pump shotgun.

Wife has my old Winchester 20 gauge with # 1 buck ready and a Ruger MKII with extra mags.

I usually keep a coupel of auto pistols by me. A .40 and .45 extra mags. A pocket auto, recently the LC9 cause it is light. And a couple of .357/.38 cal snubs for walkng the wife's inside the house ankle biters. Not very effective dogs, but noisy and defensive.

You mantioned the HiPoint carbine? I have had several of the older fugly ones in 9 mil. Recently got a 995TS with the Tacticool stock. It is better looking, aand they all worked well. It has a red dot on it now and a laser/light/vertical fore grip combo on it too. Might try it on the javelinas. And I always have an AK and AR ready with extra mags.

Also keep a .22 mag, .243, and .270 cal bolt rifles on racks with ammo on the buttstock carriers. Gotta keep the grass cut back to use them. So, I have 100 yds in 2 directiona and 40 yds. in 2 other directions. Lotta brush out here for illegals to hide in. Need to have someone come and bulldoze it all again.

Won't even mention the .22s. I fire them at the ground at night to chase off the javelinas or whatever, so the dogs will shut up.

Do you think that is enough, or am I just paranoid?

Wow pancho you make me think twice about moving to Texas. But if the opportunity came up I would still move there. Doesn't sound like your paranoid to me just prepared for most two or four legged encounters.

I'm in a nice size city we have about 200,000-225,000 people but they are spread out so it's not piled in like other big city's. And living In the city I don't want to use a rifle round as a home defense. With the houses in my area are about 10 yards apart and 50 across the street I don't need the long ranges. Just don't want to worry about how far it might go that is why I was looking at the pistol carbine. The hi point won't win a beauty contest but they do function well, and the price is good.

Man I want to get moved back to the country, just got to wait a little longer till my wife is done with school.

Pancho for bumps in the night like you have I'd have my saiga 12 with a drum full of buckshot at the ready. Something about 30 rounds of OO gives me a sense of security like little else can.
Yes, that would be nice. Kinda on the expensive side for me. As a rule, I won't pay more than 3 bills for anything and the Saiga 12s have really gone up cause of demand.

Saw a couple of guys selling a Saiga 12 and a WASR at the last gunshow in San Antonio. Guy with the Saiga wanted 8 bills for it. Guess that was about average, but not me. And it was used. Other guy wanted 5 for the WASR, not even.

I might have broken my rule of 3 bills max for anything on the Saiga. It was not modified in any way. Guy would not come down a nickle on it.

My bedroom guns are the Maverick Security 8, and a CZ-82, with a Keltec P11 and a P3AT back in the bathroom and walk in closet. There's a couple of .22 rifles with trigger locks on them in there too...keep meaning to move them.
